A Story of Community

“Memory is a way of holding on to the things you love, the things you are, the things you never want to lose.”

~The Wonder Years

Fourteen years ago last week, we had our very first class at Shri. I hesitated to write about it, after all the physical space was closed nearly four years ago. But reflecting on this milestone each year, I’m filled with an overwhelming sense of gratitude and amazement at the journey that unfolded. I was not intending to open a yoga studio, so the story of Shri Yoga is one that I never anticipated writing. When I did say yes, my vision was to create more than just a space for yoga practice; I wanted to build a supportive community of like-minded people who would come together to learn, practice, and do life together.

From the very beginning, I was blessed with a team of wonderful teachers whose dedication and passion brought Shri Yoga to life. Each brought unique gifts; their expertise and warmth made every student feel welcomed and valued. Alongside these incredible teachers was an equally amazing support staff who worked tirelessly behind the scenes, ensuring that every aspect of the studio ran smoothly. Christine, Erica, Emma, Mabel, Carly and Ali helped me build a sanctuary where people could escape the stresses of daily life and find solace on their mats.

I made plenty of mistakes along the way, but what I remember most are the countless moments of joy and fulfilment. Watching students grow in their practice, witnessing their transformations, and being a part of their journeys has been the thrill of a lifetime. The studio became a place where friendships were formed, where challenges were overcome, and where the essence of community was truly experienced. The most remarkable thing to me is how, despite the physical studio having closed, the community we built continues to thrive in new and unexpected ways. I love seeing familiar faces in my Wednesday evening class and at some of the workshops and events I do. You are like those dear friends with whom I can pick up right where I left off.

As I look back on the Shri years, I am profoundly grateful for every person who walked through our doors. Each of you has contributed to the tapestry of our community, and your presence has enriched my life in ways that words cannot fully capture. Thank you for being a part of the tribe, for sharing your practice, and for sharing your light.

And thank you for indulging me in this walk down memory lane
