When Life Asks You to Level Up

Years ago, when Layne and I were both deep in the expansion phase of our businesses — he was doubling the size of his shop, and I was opening a second studio — we had a conversation that’s stayed with me ever since. Layne said it was all feeling a bit like a video game, where you beat a level, survive the challenges, gather the skills, build your strength. Then… just when you think you’ve “arrived,” you find yourself in an entirely new world, feeling like a beginner all over again. Only this time the playing field is bigger, the stakes are higher, and the need to grow beyond what you thought you knew is humbling.

At the time, we were talking about business, but I see now that this is true of every part of life. Especially ageing. The narrative we’ve heard is that by midlife, we should feel settled in our skin, confident in our choices, sure of our path.

But I’m finding that ageing is another kind of levelling up; one that asks me to adapt, to soften, to stretch into new ways of living with an evolving body, changing roles, and a shifting identity. Levelling up in life invites us all to live fully, meeting each new version of ourselves with curiosity and courage.

So here I am again. After years of teaching yoga and building community in person, I’m stepping into a new way of building community. My app will launch in May (eep — saying it out loud!), and my vision is for a space where women can support each other through the vibrant middle seasons of mid-life and beyond. It’s exciting. It’s terrifying. It’s stretching me in ways that feel both uncomfortable and right.

And in many ways, that’s exactly what the app is designed to do: to help women navigate their own level-ups with grace, strength, and courage. It’s a space to move, to grow, and to connect — a place to be supported through all the changing seasons of mid-life and beyond.

If life has taught me anything, it’s that levelling up means finding the courage to say yes to the next adventure — even if you have to learn as you go.

Because with every trembling step we take forward, we expand what’s possible, not just for ourselves, but for everyone travelling with us.
